Desmond is in fact a fallen angel who has been sent down to earth for getting drunk at the Christmas party and committing three of the deadly sins.
He has been given the body of a recently dead man (there are rules against commandeering a living one) and charged with curing the evil of Chaffington. The body is of the not so long dead world famous Rapper DJ McCool and to Desmond's surprise he has taken on certain aspects of the desparted's personality.
